This collaborative project between myself and Jemima Goodfellow resulted in us producing a photography-based set of posters and a letter pressed set of posters. Our brief was to incorporate both our topics, Politeness and Coastal Wrecking, into a graphical outcome. We narrowed down our ideas to the two we felt had the most promise. The first being a holiday contract and the second a poster that showed the sea littering in people’s homes.
The contract was created because we felt that many of our own visitor experiences, from living in Cornwall, were not as positive as we would have liked them to be. The goal was to remind people to be polite and respectful. However, we didn’t want to be aggressive with the message and wanted it to be a soft touch because we understand how lucky we have been to live in a coastal area, and we don’t want to exclude anyone. But we did need to be firm but fair as this was our home and, like most places you visit, deserves respect. Beach littering is another big problem in coastal regions, and we also wanted to address this. I personally have attended many hours of beach cleaning and have seen the fallout of trips to the beach without cleaning up after yourself. Because of that we thought we would flip it. If you were going to litter on the beach, the beach will litter in your home. This involved us creating a photo shoot of various bits of ropes and buoys in my small flat, which was then turned into a poster containing a coastal littering statistic and QR code to the charity ‘Surfers Against Sewage’.
We took these posters around to transport hubs around Bristol to see them in use.
